Рушайло заговорил о совместных с контрразведчиками успехах. В Рязани удалось предотвратить масштабный теракт. Три мешка взрывчатого вещества на основе гексогена с включенным таймером и подсоединенным детонатором извлекли из подвала многоэтажного жилого дома...

Но главред сказал мне: «Если ты записал все, о чем говоришь, то мы даем этот синхрон на эфир в 14.00».
14.15, сразу после выпуска новостей, информационные агентства наперегонки тиражировали интервью Патрушева, одинаково предваряя его словами: «Как сообщил нашему корреспонденту директор ФСБ...». Люди сразу же соглашались принять участие в «Независимом расследовании». Чувствовалось, что после той ночи их отношение к жизни изменилось. Учебно или по-настоящему избежав смерти, теперь они отчаянно хотели знать правду.
Невольные участники учений хотели разговаривать в студии с представителями ФСБ.
Но уже через несколько дней жильцы дома, ставшего неизвестно по чьему выбору наглядным пособием, были готовы к откровениям — при любом составе участников передачи. И вот почему. Перед дверями квартир рязанцев под видом социальных работников все чаще стали появляться энергичные типчики, дававшие понять, что в дальнейшем коммунально-бытовые улучшения будут возможны только в том случае, если собравшиеся поехать в останкинскую студию откажутся от поездки.
Типчики сообщили своему фээсбэшному начальству о том, что мы привезем на двух автобусах из Рязани около шестидесяти человек, которые примут участие в «Независимом расследовании». На Лубянке приняли решение: с народом поговорить. Это журналистов можно послать подальше... Здесь же ситуация стала развиваться по опасному для чекистского ведомства сценарию. Сотрудникам распределили роли и дали указание: до последнего отстаивать в студии версию об учениях, при этом ссылаясь на необходимость и, главное, законность такого эксперимента.
И все же они были уверены, что программы не будет — испугаются последствий. Телекомпания и без того готовилась к обороне. Некоторые журналисты уже выбросили белые флаги и, выбрав на пульте вторую кнопку, после вчерашнего «нет» стали говорить беспроигрышное «да». Скоропостижно ушел главный редактор.
О том, что был звонок с самого остроконечного верха с просьбой не проводить «Независимое расследование» по рязанским событиям в канун выборов президента-преемника, я узнал от своих начальников уже после выхода программы в эфир.
Главный канал страны в главной информационной программе за день до нашего эфира сообщил о якобы готовящейся масштабной провокации, которую задумала против нарождающейся власти враждебная телекомпания. Было сказано, что для участия в заказном шоу в «Останкино» везут неких рязанских статистов, а перед входом в студию им будут раздавать гонорар — по 100 долларов каждому.

At 14:15, immediately after the news release, news agencies raced to replicate Patrushev's interview, uniformly introducing it with the words: "As the FSB director told our correspondent...". The country's main channel, in its main news program the day before our broadcast, reported on an allegedly planned large-scale provocation conceived by a hostile television company against the emerging government. It was said that for participation in the commissioned show in "Ostankino," certain Ryazan extras were being brought, and before entering the studio, they would be given a fee—$100 each.
