Пойманного террориста Юсуфа Крымшамхалова, причастного ко взрывам жилых домов в Москве и Волгодонске, наконец-то судят. Однако по-настоящему, как проходит разбирательство и чего стало известно о реальных причинах трагедии, нам, похоже, никогда не удастся. Громкий процесс приглушили, сделали тихим. Впрочем, беда еще и в том, что нашему обществу все это глубоко безразлично. Так уж оно устроено. Любое другое на его месте требовало бы открытого разбирательства, настаивало по крайней мере на объяснении причин секретности и, если она так неизбежна, — на создании особой парламентской комиссии, в которой люди с соответствующим допуском к закрытым материалам смогут наблюдать за ходом суда... Хотя о чем это мы? Общество уже определилось с парламентом...
С 1999 года «Новая газета» наблюдает за тем, как ищут исполнителей и заказчиков терактов (серия материалов «ФСБ. Гексоген. Рязань», «Гексогеновый след», материалы о банде Макса Лазовского, причастного к ранним московским взрывам). С тех пор в стране идет большая политическая игра. Основные игроки — нынешняя российская власть и ее прошлое в лице беглого олигарха Бориса Березовского. Теракты продолжались: был взрыв в переходе на Пушкинской, захват «Норд-Оста», а игроки все...
Из письма КРЫМШАМХАЛОВА и БАТЧАЕВА (еще один террорист, убитый во время совместной операции российских и грузинских спецслужб неподалеку от Панкисского ущелья Грузии) в комиссию по расследованию взрывов жилых домов в Москве и Волгодонске:
... зданий спецслужб и военных, а не жилых домов. То, что взрывы произойдут по месту хранения мешков, в подвалах жилых зданий, мы не предполагали. Время совершения терактов известно нам не было. Узнав об этих взрывах, мы бежали в Чечню.

The captured terrorist Yusuf Krymshamkhalov, involved in the bombings of residential buildings in Moscow and Volgodonsk, is finally being tried. However, it seems we will never truly know how the proceedings are going and what has become known about the real causes of the tragedy. The high-profile trial has been muffled, made quiet. Moreover, the trouble is also that our society is deeply indifferent to all this. That's just how it's built. Any other society in its place would have demanded an open trial, insisted at least on an explanation for the reasons for secrecy and, if it is so inevitable, on the creation of a special parliamentary commission in which people with appropriate clearance to classified materials could observe the progress of the trial... But what are we talking about? Society has already decided on the parliament...

We did not anticipate that the explosions would occur at the storage site of the bags, in the basements of residential buildings. The time of the terrorist attacks was not known to us.
