Новых сведений получить от них мы уже не рассчитывали. 23 октября в Берлине один из нас (Юрий Фельштинский) передал собранные к тому времени материалы главному редактору "Новой газеты" Дмитрию Муратову. Предполагалось, что "Новая газета" начнет их немедленную публикацию. 24 октября г-н Муратов действительно срочно вылетел в Москву. Он возвращался в уже другую страну – вечером 23 октября террористы захватили "Норд-Ост".

После гибели заложников на Дубровке российские спецслужбы заметно активизировались в Грузии. В ноябре к нам поступила информация о том, что ситуация крайне серьезная и шансов уцелеть у Батчаева с Крымшамхаловым мало. Интуиция подсказывала, что нужно торопиться с публикацией открытого письма, пока Батчаева и Крымшамхалов живы. 2 декабря "Новая газета" опубликовала показания Галкина. В тот же день в Хельсинки Юрий Фельштинский дал развернутое интервью Дмитрию Муратову. Оно было опубликовано 9 декабря вместе с Открытым письмом Крымшамхалова (задержанного в Грузии 7 декабря) и Батчаева (убитого в тот же день при задержании).
