Answer: I was in Khattab's camp near the settlement of Serzhen-Yurt in Chechnya for the first time in early 1997, when I was undergoing the so-called 'training course' [uchebka], and for the second time at the end of the same year. This time I worked in this camp as a driver of a 'Ural' truck. I met Abu Umar during my first visit to this camp. Abu Umar is about 170 - 175 cm tall, thin, looks about 30 years old. He had long black hair and a beard. Black eyes. Skin color typical for an Arab - dark. His appearance was typically Arabic. I don't remember any special features. Previously, he constantly wore a gray coat, knee-length. He preferred to wear national Arabic clothing: something like a dress and wide trousers. At that time (in 1997), he almost constantly carried an automatic rifle; there was no pistol.

He knew explosives very well and taught this only to Arabs. Abu Umar also studied under him.
