Account of Travel to Volgodonsk

Timur Batchaev and I were driving the loaded KAMAZ to Volgodonsk.

  • Dekkushev left shortly before us in his "Moskvich" to arrange, as he told me, the sale.
  • On the way, not far from Nevinnomyssk, the KAMAZ broke down – a piston in the engine blew out.
  • I took "hitchhikes" to the city and there, in one of the garages (there were many "Tatra" trucks there and, I think, the number "2" was in the name), I arranged for a repair.
  • One of the "Tatra" tractors went to the breakdown site and towed our KAMAZ to the garages.
  • It was being repaired for about two days.
  • Timur paid for everything, having been given the money by Dekkushev.
  • On the road, at GAI [traffic police] posts, we were often stopped and our passage was registered.
  • Furthermore, until the Volgodonsk - Rostov-on-Don junction, we drove in a convoy of passing KAMAZ trucks, where the drivers were Karachays who knew the road (I don't remember their names).
  • After this junction, we followed the signs.
  • In this way, we reached Volgodonsk.

I want to add that no one—neither Aliev, nor Magayaev, nor the drivers of the "Mercedes", nor the taxi driver in whose car Khakim Abaev accompanied the "Mercedes", nor the GAI officer who let Ruslan's KAMAZ through the post—knew anything about the nature of the cargo being transported.
