Subject: Trial on apartment bombings: petition of the victims
For Immediate Release
Moscow, November 6. - Tatyana Morozova, a victim in the case of the apartment bombings in Moscow and Volgodonsk, has petitioned the court regarding the circumstances of her lawyer's arrest. In a petition filed with the Moscow City Court, Morozova, whose mother died in the explosion on Guryanov Street, argues that the arrest of Mikhail Trepashkin was a provocation intended to:
* Prevent the disclosure of facts in court.
* Hinder her rights as a victim.
* Obstruct an objective and comprehensive trial.
Background of the Case
- The trial of Adam Dekkushev and Yusuf Krymshamkhalov on terrorism charges commenced at the Moscow City Court on October 31.
- Lawyer Trepashkin, representing the Morozov family, was arrested on October 24 after an unregistered pistol was found in his car during a highway stop.
- Trepashkin claims the pistol was planted on him.
Morozova requests the judge to "consider in this trial the circumstances of the arrest of Mikhail Trepashkin as an obstacle to the administration of justice by preventing his participation as my representative." Furthermore, Tatyana Morozova has appealed to the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva with a complaint concerning her lawyer's arrest.
Family Details and Investigation Context
- Sisters Tatyana and Alyona Morozova reside in the USA.
- Alyona Morozova, who was in the building during the explosion and sustained injuries, is a member of the Public Commission for the Investigation of the Explosions (Kovalyov Commission).
- The trial concerning the bombings is being held behind closed doors.
- Tatyana Morozova is the only officially recognized victim who refused to sign a non-disclosure agreement during the preliminary investigation stage.
- In June 2003, she traveled to Moscow and was questioned by an FSB investigator in the presence of her lawyer, Mikhail Trepashkin, who also collaborated with the Kovalyov Commission.
Morozova's Allegations
In her petition, Morozova states:
"Based on reports in the Russian press, the circumstances of the arrest known to me, as well as the hostile attitude towards me of investigator Ignatiev, I have reason to believe that the charges against Mikhail Trepashkin were fabricated by the FSB of the Russian Federation."
She further asserts:
"...Mikhail Trepashkin had instructions to announce on my behalf in court a number of facts directly related to the circumstances, perpetrators, and masterminds of the apartment bombings."
