The Conservative party warned Blair: "This is a highly sensitive time for Tony Blair to be lending his support to Vladimir Putin," said the shadow foreign secretary, Francis Maude. "It can only be justified if he uses this opportunity to make it unequivocally clear to Mr Putin that global stability depends on Russia maintaining the standards of a civilised country."
