Alexander Nagorny

The editorial office of Alexander Prokhanov's newspaper "Zavtra" essentially represented an example of a residency of the GRU of the Russian Federation. The activities of this newspaper were aimed at achieving the goals pursued by the special services-"patriots."

For 20 years, the deputy editor-in-chief of Prokhanov has been Alexander Alekseevich Nagorny, born in 1947 in Moscow into a family of GRU employees. In addition to his parents, his maternal grandfather and grandmother devoted a significant number of years to service in military intelligence. Alexander followed the same path, which became a family tradition, recalling many years later at the celebration of his 70th birthday:

"...After receiving my high school diploma in 1965, there was not even a question for me where to go – I entered, of course, the same institute where my parents studied and met each other (Military Institute of Foreign Languages – VIIYA, a forge of cadres for the GRU. – Note by V. Popov). And there I was offered, along with the English language, to study Chinese. Of course, this was an unexpected offer, but I accepted it, and this circumstance largely determined my future life path. ...I was soon offered to work 'under the cover' of a civilian specialist, which I did for most of my life. After graduating from the institute, I received a distribution to TASS, worked there for several years in different editorial offices, then in 1975 I entered the graduate school of the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in 1978 I defended my candidate's dissertation 'Internal Political Roots of US Policy towards China,' taught in the USA and South Korea, and often visited China. ...In 1985, I worked as an 'escort and at the same time observer' for the director of the Institute of Strategic Studies at Columbia University, Seweryn Bialer... who was a very important person: effectively the deputy of Zbigniew Brzezinski. ...I left for the Republic of Korea, where I had an invitation to teach. After the defeat in October 1993, this was a retreat to reserve positions, since I was under threat of arrest by the Yeltsin regime. And only a few years later I returned to my homeland and... accepted the offer of Alexander Andreevich Prokhanov, with whom I was already familiar from the events of 1992–1993. ...I consider myself a patriot and a statesman, a like-minded person of such ideologists as Alexander Prokhanov and Sergey Kurginyan."

Anton Surikov

In addition to Nagorny, a member of the editorial board of the newspaper "Zavtra" and one of its main authors and bloggers was Anton Surikov, who died suddenly in his 49th year of life on November 23, 2009. The Russian media did not leave his suspicious death without attention. Here is what his friend Mikhail Rostovsky wrote about Surikov:

"At the end of last week, Anton Surikov was buried in Moscow – a former official of the Russian government apparatus, an intelligence officer and a publicist. ...A GRU officer who, among other things, trained Colombian partisans in Soviet times. An active participant in the war in Abkhazia. The right hand of the former member of the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee Yuri Maslyukov during his time as the first deputy prime minister of Russia. A close acquaintance of some former CIA bosses and current leaders of the Ukrainian special services. A man who knew everyone and everything in the left-wing circles of Russia. ...He was constantly moving between Russia and such exotic places as Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Dubai... Anton Surikov belonged to that part of our officers who still have not been able to come to terms with the collapse of the USSR. The Russian Federation in its current form has never become a truly native country for him."

The circumstances of Surikov's premature death indeed looked suspicious. While on a business trip in Izhevsk, he went into a cafe to have a snack and did not come out of the cafe alive. He died almost instantly. As the doctors believed, Surikov's heart suddenly stopped and it was not possible to save him. Of course, such a strange death gave rise to rumors and suspicions that Surikov was killed.
